New Brunswickers Are Too Dependent On Cars

A new study from U-N-B’s Urban and Community Studies Institute claims people in New Brunswick are too dependent on getting around by car which is costing them a greater percentage of their income than the national average.

The report also argues this dependence is costing the economy by undermining job creation as well as the ability of businesses to recruit workers and compete.

Institute Director Yves Bourgeois has determined half of people underestimate how much it costs to run a vehicle by 4 thousand dollars or more a year and it is estimated it takes over 10 thousand dollars a year to operate a compact car, the cost of which makes it hard on young people just starting out, the elderly, newly arrived immigrants and the physically disabled.
