If you’re concerned you or a senior in your life could be being scammed, there’s some information being put out by the province that could be useful.
According to legal education expert Deborah Doherty, seniors sometimes are suspicious of power of attorney and shared bank accounts because they’re worried they could be exploited. A new guide called Protect Yourself from Abuse and Fraud: A Guide for Seniors encourages retirees to explore legal options.
She says there are more opportunities for someone to take advantage of a senior who hasn’t planned ahead and chosen someone to act on their behalf when they are no longer capable.
