Nova Scotia’s Energy Minister Says Anti-Fracking Bill Coming This Fall

The Nova Scotia government says it will introduce legislation this fall to ban hydraulic fracking for onshore shale gas.

Energy Minister Andrew Younger says he has read hundreds of letters written by concerned Nova Scotians – many asking for a ban on fracking.

The decision comes less than a week after a panel of experts released a report saying fracking shouldn’t be allowed until more research is done on its impacts.

A two-year moratorium on fracking was put in place in 2012.

However, Younger says the ban is not permanent.

It is not known how long the ban will remain in place.
