Nurses Union Says Violence Against Nurses Is Getting Worse

The provincial government is being urged to take steps to make the workplace safer for nurses.

The New Brunswick Nurses Union reports 66 per cent of its members over the past year say they have experienced violence or verbal abuse over the past year while at work.

Union President Paula Doucet would like risk assessments be carried out, claiming the problem of workplace violence against nurses is getting worse in New Brunswick.

Doucet would like to see New Brunswick include workplace violence as a hazard in its Occupational Health and Safety legislation.

She warns nurses, as a result of workplace violence and verbal abuse, are becoming sick. There could be long term psychological effects and productivity suffers.
