Staff at a Saint John nursing home are being credited for their actions after a small fire broke out on the weekend.
Fire crews were called to Kennebec Manor on Sunday morning after a baseboard heater in one of the resident rooms started sparking.
Tammy Allaby, CEO of Kings Way Lifecare Alliance — which operates the nursing home — said staff acted quickly to get the two residents out of the room.
“Once that room was evacuated, then following protocol, they shut the door and continued to remove residents in that zone to a safe zone,” said Allaby.
A police officer who arrived on the scene used a fire extinguisher on the heater, she said.
Allaby said staff at the nursing home go through mock situations during fire drills so they are ready for incidents like this.
“Sometimes they feel like don’t really know what they’re doing, but when a situation happens, everybody just kicks it into gear,” she said.
Allaby said two residents and an employee were taken to the Saint John Regional Hospital after the fire.
“It was more of a precaution where they were in the room when the smoke started coming from the heater,” she said.
No damage was reported, according to the Saint John Fire Department.
