A Saint John police officer accused of providing a false police report has opted to be tried by a jury.
Sgt. David Kimball faces three charges: falsifying a police report, obstruction of justice, and breach of trust.
Kimball’s lawyer, Nathan Gorham, appeared on his behalf in Saint John Provincial Court on Wednesday morning.
Gorham elected for a trial by judge and jury, and a one-day preliminary inquiry was set for July 29, 2022.
New Brunswick RCMP announced the charges in November and said they are related to Kimball’s alleged actions during an investigation on April 17 and 18.
Mounties said they launched an investigation after receiving a complaint from Public Prosecutions on May 7.
A judge and Crown prosecutor from Nova Scotia are handling the case.
Kimball, a 23-year member of the Saint John Police Force, is suspended with pay under the provisions of the New Brunswick Police Act.
A Police Act investigation will take place once the criminal court proceedings have concluded.
