Ottawa has confirmed renewed funding for National Acadian Day celebrations across the country.
The Liberals announced Tuesday they will spend $1.5 million over the next three years, starting in 2024.
Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe MP Ginette Petitpas Taylor and Beauséjour MP Dominic LeBlanc made the announcement in Moncton on Monday.
“Our Acadian culture is rich and diverse and contributes to Canada’s collective heritage in countless ways,” Petitpas Taylor said in a news release.
“It’s a time to gather with family and friends to celebrate who we are and what defines us as Acadians,” LeBlanc said of National Acadian Day, also known as Le Quinze Août.
Officials said the funding will support more than 100 activities organized across the country over the coming three years.
August 15 was designated as the Acadian national holiday, known today as National Acadian Day, during the first National Acadian Convention in Memramcook, N.B., in 1881.
