The Gallant government will spend $1.2 million to start planning for a new Route 1 interchange that will create a north-south connection between Foster Thurston Drive and Ashburn Lake Road.
Pre-construction will take more than two years with the work expected to begin in the spring of 2021.
Four-way traffic lights will be installed at the intesection of Rotheay Avenue and Rothesay Road and at the westbound off-ramp of Route 1 at Rothesay Avenue.

Premier Gallant says this move will help further develop the city of Saint John with quicker access to the east side shopping area and to UNB Saint John and the Regional hospital.
