Petition To Save Old Town Hall In St. Stephen Making Rounds On Social Media

An online petition making the rounds on social media to save the Old St. Stephen Town Hall from demolition.

The Old Town Hall Arts Centre Steering Group has started a petition on Change.org to save the 130 year old building on Milltown Blvd, in an open letter to Minister of Tourism Heritage and Culture Bill Fraser, New Brunswick South-West MP Karen Ludwig, St. Stephen Mayor John Quartermain and St. Stephen Town Council.

Council has already voted in favor of the demolition, and recent quotes for renovating the building to code reach over $2 million dollars.

Rory Pickard of Dillon Consulting giving a presentation on their “Condition Assessment” of the property, giving a long list of damage, including mold in the basement, flooding issues, some walls are not framed or insulated, collapsed interior walls, rotted framework, and missing bricks. Pickard also said the entire electrical and ventilation system would need to be re-done.

The petition has over 270 signatures so far, with most of the names from residents of Charlotte County, some reaching from across Canada, and even signatures from those in Maine and the UK.
