Point Lepreau nuclear station offline for fan repairs

The Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station has been offline since Monday as NB Power works to address an issue with a cooling fan.

The utility stated that the fan is a critical component, and repairs require the station to be offline to ensure the work is completed safely and effectively.

NB Power assured that there is no safety risk to the public or the environment.

The utility has not yet determined the duration of the repairs, as the timeline will depend on the results of a complete diagnostic assessment.

The company explained that this temporary outage will not impact New Brunswick’s energy supply.

Point Lepreau has a generation capacity of 660 megawatts and is considered a vital part of the province’s electrical grid.

NB Power noted that it helps New Brunswick meet its clean energy goals, as the station supplies about 80 per cent of the province’s electricity from renewable or non-polluting sources.
