A 7-year construction project at the West side port begins when they recieve approvals from two levers of government.
It’s 205 million dollar project with the cost shared equally begin the Saint John Port Authority and the Federal and Provincal governments.
Port Saint John CEO Jim Quinn says the current wharf face will be lengthened by almost 300 metres.
He tells us the water depth will go down from 12.2 metres to 15.2 metres which he describes as essential because the larger ships in today’s fleet are growing to that point where you need to have that deeper water.
During the construction phase, the project will create over 1400 person years of direct and indirect jobs and container growth will double jobs across the region from 500 to more than 1000. For more on the Port, click here
