Preparations underway for Saint John’s first Indigenous powwow

Preparations are underway for Saint John’s first Indigenous powwow.

The Menahqesk Powwow is coming to TD Station on October 26 and 27, organized by the City of Saint John alongside Double Curve Media, an Indigenous media organization based in New Brunswick.

Nipahtuwet Naka Wespahtuwet ‘Possesom’ Paul, the event coordinator and founder of Double Curve Media, stated the event is an opportunity for Indigenous peoples to socialize, dance, sing, and honour their cultures.

“It’s a great opportunity for them to have a nexus, to gather, and all the beautiful things that happen when we gather, we might see new organizations pop out because of that,” added Paul.

Menahqesk is the Wolastoqey name for the area, meaning “where the sea takes the land.”

According to city officials, the powwow will be led by the Wolastoqityik and Mi’kmaq Nations, featuring dozens of performers and vendors.

The two-day celebration is expected to attract over 10,000 visitors to the Greater Saint John area.
