Pros And Cons To Postponement Of 2021 Canada Games

Many athletes are disappointed after the 2021 Canada Games were postponed to 2022 due to COVID-19.

The games were scheduled to be held in August next year in Niagara, Ontario.

Team New Brunswick’s Chef de Mission Nicole Smith says there might also be a sense of relief, because the pandemic prevented many of them from training to their full potential, “Athletes are resilient and I think they will hang in their and hopefully stick around for the next year. It might actually be beneficial for them that this decision has been made. They will have an extra couple of months, they can train and hopefully things will start to open up and they’ll star competing and playing and they’ll be more ready for 2022 at the Games.”

Smith says there’s no word yet, whether there will be accommodations made for those who will no longer fit the age requirement.

“No doubt they are working very hard with the national sport organizations right now to make those decisions as to what are they going to do to the eligibility age, because that certainly has a major impact on a lot of athletes and coaches and planning.”
