Saint John police chief John Bates tells us in this country people cherish their rights and freedoms and should the police become actively involved in usurping those rights in the name of security, people will challenge that.
He calls it a real tough balancing act saying when they have actionable intelligence they take the necessessary steps.
Bates says they police with the permission of the public but when the lines are blurred on that and they start to lose the public’s trust that is when it becomes a concern.
He says people trust the police to protect them and their rights.
