Province Will Spend Money “Smarter” To Grow Economy

Instead of just giving companies money as an incentive to set up shop in New Brunswick, the provincial government is going to be smarter in its spending to grow the economy. So claims David Campbell, the chief economist for the province who says the spending will be made on specific opportunities that can foster economic growth.

Campbell says the government wants another focus to be on urban growth.

Saint John Common Councillor Donna Reardon wonders how urban growth will be achieved if the tax rates in cities are higher than in outlying municipalities and rural areas. Councillor David Merrithew, who chairs the city’s Finance Committee, says people are financially empowered to live outside cities in the province.

Deputy Mayor Shirley McAlary says the trades should be brought back into the school curriculum.
