He hasn’t studied the report closely yet but provincial Conservative leader Blaine Higgs wants to at least meet with Saint John Mayor Don Darling to talk about fair property taxation.
City Manager Jeff Trail has come out with several recommendations designed to make Saint John more financially sustainable.
Higgs says he understands the city’s tough situation with huge infrastructure to maintain while the population has been on the decline.
Higgs says he finds it ironic that Premier Brian Gallant who bills himself as the regional minister for Saint John has rejected the report outright.
Provincial Green Party leader David Coon has tweeted he plans to introduce a bill in the Legislature to remove the tax exemption for machinery and equipment that was one of the recommendations in Trail’s report.
