Perhaps you or someone you know is going to quit smoking as their New Year’s Resolution, and the provincial government wants to help.
They are reminding New Brunswickers tobacco use is a main risk factor in many chronic health conditions, including cancer.
However, within four weeks of quitting, blood circulation begins to improve, and physical exertion becomes easier as lungs work better.
After five years without smoking, the risk of developing cancer in several organs including the lungs, mouth, heart, and throat is reduced.
Finally, by the time 15 years have gone by, your life expectancy and risk of heart disease will be the same as a non-smoker.
Support systems are available for those who need it.
