Provincial Spokesperson Says Cannabis NB Decision Cannot Be Rushed

There’s still no word on what is to come for Cannabis NB.

The provincial government issued a request for RFP’s in 2019 so the corporation could be run privately.

Spokesperson for the Finance and Treasury Board Jennifer Vienneau says the process is ongoing and will continue in 2021.

She recognizes, “The process has been longer than expected due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but says this is an important decision that cannot be rushed.”

Vienneau adds, “The provincial government needs to ensure New Brunswickers have a cannabis retail model that focuses on public health, education and safety and offers the best value for taxpayers.”

Eight companies submitted proposals to the provincial government in 2019. One has been since been withdrawn.

Cannabis NB lost almost $12.5 million in its first fiscal year, but it recorded an increase in profit in 2020.
