Quispamsis Woman Qualifies For 2018 CrossFit Games

A Quispamsis physiotherapist has qualified for the CrossFit games — a destination hundreds of thousands of athletes worldwide set their sights on each year.

36-year-old Colleen McQuaid, who has qualified for the games in the 35-39 masters division, started doing CrossFit four years ago after having her third baby as a way to get back in shape.

“I always loved working out, I was a gymnast growing up…I played a lot of hockey, I did varsity hockey and varsity cross-country running in university,” says McQuaid. “I never liked the regular gym…[CrossFit] looked fun and I thought I’d give it a try.”

McQuaid placed 20th in the world in her age group among over 30,000 women at the CrossFit Open this winter.

“In April, I did the online qualifier, so that was four workouts in four days. Your score from the Open counts as one of your scores, so you have five scores,” says McQuaid.

“I did those four workouts in four days and finished in the top 20 in the world and that’s how I qualified to go.”

The games take place this year in Madison, Wisconsin from August 1-5. In the Masters Athletes 35-39 division, the top prize is $25K U.S. for first place, $10K for second, and $5K for third.

A t-shirt and tank fundraiser is being held for McQuaid.
