Rate Of Health Care Spending Growth ‘Unsustainable’ Study Author Says

Spending on health care in the not-too-distant future could eat up almost half of the federal budget by 2030.

That’s according to a study released by the Fraser Institute called The Sustainability of Health Care Spending in Canada. The study also estimates that by 2030 five provinces: PEI, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, and British Columbia will see health spending by provincial governments near or over 50-percent of total program spending.

“Changes are clearly needed in Canada’s health care system in order to ensure the sustainability of not only health care, but also other priority areas of spending,” says study co-author Bacchus Barua.

Last year in New Brunswick health spending took up 39-percent and that’s expected to grow to 49-percent by 2030. Nationally it was at 40-percent in 2015 and is projected to grow to 47 by 2030.
