RCMP issues safety reminder as students return to school

As students return to class this week, the RCMP is reminding drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians to stay alert around school zones and bus stops.

Cpl. Jamie Perreault, with the RCMP’s community policing unit, says the return of school buses brings heavier traffic and a need for extra caution.

“We’re asking everyone, from motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists, to be patient, watch for flashing lights, and stay aware of students waiting at the roadside,” Perreault said.

He emphasized that all traffic must stop in both directions when a school bus has its lights flashing and the stop sign is extended.

Officers will be patrolling school zones in the first week to reinforce safe driving habits. Perreault added that safety goes beyond avoiding tickets.

“This isn’t just about fines,” he said. “One mistake can change a family’s life. It’s about protecting children.”

The RCMP is also encouraging parents and guardians to talk with their children about safety, who’s allowed to pick them up, and how to stay cautious around strangers.

Anyone who sees a safety concern near a school is asked to report it to the police.
