RCMP officers cleared in 2023 death

RCMP officers have been cleared after the death of a man in northwestern New Brunswick man in 2023.

Police went to the man’s home in Saint-Joseph-de-Madawaska on Feb. 3 to execute a search warrant and arrest him in relation to firearms offences.

“When officers arrived, the man fired a gunshot in their direction,” said a report from the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT).

Officers used a negotiator and gas munitions to try and get the man to come out of the residence safely, said the report.

“After several hours at the location and no response from the man, police entered the residence where they found him deceased by a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” it said.

SiRT said it found no reasonable grounds to believe the officers committed a criminal offence in connection with the man’s death.

The team investigates all matters involving death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence, or other matters of public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in New Brunswick.
