Rothesay Becomes Breastfeeding Friendly

A move is afoot to remove the stigma associated with new mothers breastfeeding in public.

The town of Rothesay has been persuaded to join Grand Bay-Westfield and Quispamsis in becoming a breastfeeding friendly community and encourage local busineses to be more supportive.

Public Health nurse Kellie Sisk says breastfeeding protects new borns from later developing a whole host of childhood illnesses.

According to Sisk, only 24 per cent of new moms in New Brunswick are still exclusively breastfeeding after 4 months and that’s below the six months up to the age of 2 recommended by the World Health Organisation and Health Canada.
