Saint Andrews To Host Sustainable Craft Market

A new market in Charlotte County will feature upcycled or repurposed items with a goal to reduce single-use plastics.

It’s part of the #debrisfreeFundy initiative of the Huntsman Marine Science Centre and the Fundy Discovery Aquarium which began in 2016.

Courtney Piercey says Huntsman already has a rope recycling and collection program.

“We actually go out to local harbours to collect fishing rope that fisherman and other industries are completely finished with. We repurpose that into mats, bowls and things like that,” Piercey said.

They also have some vendors who make mittens from old sweaters.

Piercey said they want vendors to use upcycled and repurposed items. She said they encourage finding alternatives to plastic.

“If anyone is selling any baked goods, to not have that wrapped individually in saran wrap, to have other options. Potentially having everything in one, big Tupperware container and having wax bags,” Piercey said.

Customers are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags when attending the event.

The first Sustainable Craft Market will be held on December 4th from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Fundy Discovery Aquarium.
