Saint John Cardiac Rehab Walk marks 25 years of heart support

The Saint John Cardiac Rehab Walk is marking 25 years of walking toward stronger hearts.

The annual event supports the Cardiac Health and Wellness Program at the New Brunswick Heart Centre, which includes cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, as well as the Heart Function Clinic.

Since its launch, the walk has generated over $450,000 for the Cardiac Health and Wellness Program at the New Brunswick Heart Centre.

Donor contributions support everything from fitness equipment to staff training and educational resources, as well as critical tools that aren’t covered by hospital budgets.

Natasha O’Donnell, director of annual giving at the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation, says the event’s success is rooted in personal connections and community pride.

“This event has created a wonderful community of caring and support that has lasted 25 years strong,” she said.

“It’s really down to people who care.”

Among the most memorable participants was Murray Gilchrist, who raised $120,000 over two decades and became a beloved figure at the walk. The top fundraiser award now bears his name.

“He’s somebody who holds a very special place in my heart, and in many others’ hearts connected to this event,” O’Donnell said.

“Even though last year was the first time we held the walk without him, this year we’ll feel his spirit. His memory will be there.”

This year’s walk will feature a “walkway of memories” along Harbour Passage, showcasing photos and stories from past events.

Patient testimonials will be shared on stage, including remarks from Sean McNeely, a former patient whose entire family has been impacted by the program.

A new highlight this year is a head-shaving fundraiser by a recent graduate of the rehab program.

Rick Millan has already surpassed his $500 goal, and thanks to a matching donation from MacLeod Meat Locker, he’s raised $1,000 for the Cardiac Rehab Program.

To celebrate, Rick will be shaving his head live on the Cardiac Walk stage at 11:30 a.m. this Saturday.

“At the end of the day, the equipment and education inside the program are all donor-funded,” O’Donnell said.

“It’s lovely to see people come out, come together, and know what they’re supporting and how it’s going to help others in their community moving forward.”

The walk takes place on Saturday, beginning at Harbour Passage. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. at Market Square Atrium, with the walk starting at 10 a.m.

Participants will receive free t-shirts and refreshments, and prizes will be awarded to top fundraisers.
