Saint John company faces charges in fatal Nfld. refinery explosion

A Saint John-based company has been charged in a fatal refinery explosion in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Lorneville Mechanical Contractors is facing three occupational health and safety charges, according to a release from the Newfoundland and Labrador government.

  • Failure to ensure the health, safety and welfare of its workers.
  • Failure to ensure its undertaking did not expose other persons to hazards.
  • Failure to ensure safe work procedures were followed.

The owner of the Come by Chance refinery, Braya Renewable Fuels, is also facing 11 charges in connection with the incident, said the release.

Eight people were injured in the flash explosion and fire in September 2022. One of those workers later died from their injuries.

Both companies are scheduled to make their first court appearance in August.
