Saint John Council Gets An Eye-Opening Fiscal Update

The City of Saint John is facing some tough choices when it comes to its budget for 2018.

Common Council was given a report Tuesday night that shows there will be a $4.4 million dollar shortfall or 6.7 cents on the tax rate and a long term strategy will be the way of the future in order to get the city finances back in order.

Mayor Don Darling says the hard work is still ahead and he says they know what they need to do to get the city back on track over the next ten years and that starts with the 2018 budget.

The Mayor says he personally isn’t in favour of a tax increase calling it a death blow for the city, He says cuts are likely in the offing but the decision will be made by full council.
