Saint John Council Signals Support For Softwood Lumber Industry

As the softwood lumber dispute between Canada and the U.S. continues to heat up, Saint John is making known exactly where it stands behind the industry.

At its latest meeting, Saint John council voted to declare its support for the softwood lumber industry with mayor Don Darling getting the green light from councillors to send off letters saying exactly that.

Last week, Unifor members at the Irving Pulp and Paper Mill rallied in hopes of encouraging the federal government to reach a softwood lumber deal with the U.S. before any more jobs are lost. Darling tells CHSJ News there was something there that really made an impact on him.

“One thing that really moved me at the rally is they had, at one point, folks hold up signs of towns or municipalities in New Brunswick that have active forestry industries and all of the small and medium sized and large municipalities around the province, just how much of an impact this could have,” Darling says.

“For us to pass a motion and send a letter off of support I think that’s the least we could do.”

This passed unanimously:
