Saint John emergency officials are still urging people within the voluntary evacuation area to leave their homes.
Kevin Clifford is the city’s EMO director and says water levels have hit 5.5 metres and will continue rising until at least Tuesday.
About 190 people have already fled their homes, but that’s not as many as emergency officials would like to see.
“We think what’s going to happen over Friday, Saturday and Sunday is that people will find themselves in situations that they haven’t been before,” says Clifford. “We feel that we’ll get further an increase of folks who say ‘yeah, we need to leave’.”
Clifford says if everyone waits until the last moment to leave, it could be hard for them to help everyone at once.
Saint John Energy has disconnected power to more than 30 homes, and officials are warning residents may begin to lose water and sewer services as the river levels rise.
