While walking around the uptown area, Saint John mayor Don Darling came across some tossed-out furniture, couches and a mattress, at the corner of Duke and Sydney streets and so took to Facebook where he posted a video.
Darling says to keep our city clean and grow civic pride, we can’t do this.
“I just walked here, there’s garbage on the street. The city staff cannot police all of these things,” says Darling.
“Look, I don’t do this, I’m not the garbage police. I’m out for a walk, I’m trying to get a quick bite for lunch and some fresh air and I’m just trying to say folks, 658-4455 – any four unit or smaller, please Saint John, take a couple seconds and make a phone call and we’ll come and pick these items up.”
You can watch the video here.
The City of Saint John tells CHSJ News you can report an unsightly premises or illegal dumping by calling that number that Darling shared and citizens are encouraged to report illegal dumping.
We’re told if it’s on private property, the city works with the owner.
Bulky item pick-up can only be used twice yearly for residential properties. The city will collect up to 3 bulky items per pick up for single family homes, for multi units with 2 to 4 units, the city will pick up to 6 registered bulky items per pick up. The city does note, though, that bulky items pick-ups for multi-units have to be coordinated with the property owner.
