Saint John police have arrested two men in connection with an armed robbery at an uptown business.
Just after 7 p.m. Friday, an officer saw two men walking with their faces covered and carrying duffle bags in the Union Street area.
“When the officer attempted to speak to the men, they both started running,” police said in a news release on Monday.
As the officer chased the men, reports came in of a robbery that had happened minutes earlier at a business on Germain Street.
Two men had allegedly entered the business while armed with a firearm. They left on foot with stolen items, including cash.
Police said two men, aged 31 and 39, were arrested for robbery with help from other responding officers.
“One of the suspects attempted to assault an officer with a chemical irritant and a taser was deployed to arrest the individual,” said the release. “The other suspect was arrested without further incident.”
Both men appeared in court on Saturday and were remanded to custody for a bail hearing on Monday.
No physical injuries were reported as a result of the robbery, according to police.
Investigators are appealing for witnesses or anyone in the area that has dashcam or video surveillance of the incident.
