Saint John likes to celebrate its Irish Heritage with the claim that we’re the most Irish City in Canada–but we’ve also got some deep Francophone roots.
Saint John will be celebrating those roots at the World Acadian Congress. Mayor Mel Norton tells CHSJ News the symposium continues until August 24 and deals with Acadian history, arts and culture, identity, governance, and education.
The Mayor says we probably have the deepest Francophone history in this province because right after St Croix island, this is were Samuel de Champlain came. The congress is happening at three sites in New Brunswick, Maine, and Quebec.
