Saint John To Use 2008 Level As Full Flood Response Trigger

The City of Saint John has come up with a plan to ensure that a proper response is made should there be any flooding again this spring.

Director of Emergency Operations for Saint John, Mike Carr says they are using the 2008 flood level as a baseline for their spring freshet response.

“5.2 metres the flood level from 2008 would trigger a full activation of Saint John EMO and the establishment of sandbag distribution centres”, stated Carr.

Monica Boudreau is the Operations Manager for Transportation and Environmental Services and says they are looking to have a few sandbag centres set up if needed.

“Our goal is to have people when the 5.2 metres is reached come to our facilities, up to three, and depending on the flood, it may be one, two or three, and pick up sandbags.”

However, if the 2008 level of 5.2 metres is not reached and minor flooding still occurs, residents will be on their own to purchase and fill sandbags.
