In the “Q”

The Saint John Sea Dogs won their home opener last night over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 3-2. Mathieu Joseph scored twice and added an assist and was the first star of the game.

In MLB

David Ortiz hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 7th inning to help give the Red Sox a 5-3 win over the Blue Jays, the Orioles hammered the Yankees 8-1, the Tigers beat the Braves 6-2 and the Mariners took a 5-1 win over the Athletics.

With two games left in the season the Blue Jays sit in the final wildcard spot with the Tigers trailing by half of a game and the Mariners are two games back.

In the NHL

In preseason action the Maple Leafs beat the Sabres 8-1, the Bruins edged the Red Wings in overtime 2-1, the Oilers fell to the Jets 5-1, the Flames beat the Canucks 2-1 and the Penguins shut out the Blackhawks 1-0.

In Major Midget hockey

Drew Johnston scored the shootout winner to give the Saint John Vito’s a 2-1 win over the Moncton Flyers
