School Begins Tuesday For Many Kids

Students start going back to class on Tuesday, but not everyone in the Anglophone South School District begins at the same time.

Superintendent Zoe Watson told our newsroom kindergarten students start through a staggered entry process, with half of the students attending each day.

“That is so our schools can receive the kindergarten children in smaller numbers so it’s not one teacher having 20, 21 students all come together to kindergarten on that first day,” Watson said, adding all kindergarten children will attend together on Thursday.

Watson said parents and guardians should already have been made aware of which day their child is starting.

All students in grades 1 to 5 begin classes on Tuesday.

For most middle and high school students, there is a “transition day” with only grades 6 and 9 students attending on Tuesday and all students in grades 6 to 12 attending on Wednesday.

It is a chance for students to tour their new school, meet their teachers, and learn about some of the extracurricular activities they have.

Watson said it is something they have been doing for several years to reduce anxiety for those going to a new school.

“You could move from Norton Elementary School, where you’ve been for six years in a school of around 100 students, and you’re moving into Sussex Middle School, where there would be 400, 500 students and a very large building,” she said.

There are some exceptions, though: Grades K-8 schools will not have a Grade 6 transition day, so all students will attend on Tuesday, Grades 6-12 schools will not have a Grade 9 transition day, and in Grades K-12 schools there will not be a Grade 6 or 9 transition day.

If you have questions, you are encouraged to contact your child’s school or check the school website.
