Science Centre Mourns Loss Of Harbour Seal

The Huntsman Marine Science Centre in Saint Andrews is mourning the loss of one of its harbour seals.

Loki passed away peacefully Monday at the Fundy Discovery Aquarium, the centre said on social media.

At the age of 29, Loki was “considerably older” than the 15 to 25 years harbour seals normally live in the wild.

“Loki was very gentle and curious – often playfully chasing the diver’s fins during tank cleaning and ‘standing’ on the bottom to spy on our Aquarist while she worked downstairs,” the centre said in a Facebook post.

Loki was born at the Huntsman Marine Science Centre on May 21, 1993.

He moved to Storybrook Gardens in Ontario as a young seal before returning to the centre in 2009 with his son, Snorkel.

Loki greeted more than 390,000 visitors during his time at the Huntsman, according to the centre.

“We will continue to process and mourn the loss of Loki in the coming days at the Fundy Discovery Aquarium,” said the Facebook post.
