Saint John students from St. Malachy’s Memorial high school and Saint John High are taking part in the third round of an online North American cybersecurity competition called CyberTitan.
The competition involves creating a strategy to defend your virtual computer and teams have to find cybersecurity issues while also keeping the computer functioning properly.
Grade 12 SJHS student Shane Scott is one of the participants and he explains:
“Essentially, we have to go through your desktop, and we have to make sure that everything’s locked down. Your firewall is locked down, no one can get into your computer,” says Scott.
“There’s a bit of a difference because there are servers on this, so that means that there are going to be users that we have to ensure that their accounts are locked and their accounts are secure.”
Caleb Raynes, also a grade 12 SJHS student, is another one of the students participating in CyberTitan.
“I’ve always been a big fan of computers, building software, anything with them, ” says Raynes. “And this was just another opportunity to learn more about one of my favourite things.”
Provincial Education minister Brian Kenny was on hand at SJHS to meet with the students participating in the third round of CyberTitan.
CyberTitan has four qualification rounds and the third round is happening from Friday to Sunday. The top dozen teams in the open division will receive an invitation to the finals in Baltimore, Maryland in April.
Other New Brunswick schools participaint include Central New Brunswick Academy, Caledonia Regional High School and Riverview HIgh school.
