Snow And High Winds Hammer Saint John Region

A huge storm is battering the Saint John region as two low pressure systems combine for a real snowmaker.

All schools in the Anglophone South and Francophone South School Districts are closed today because of the storm.

U-N-B Saint John and the Community College campuses in Saint John and Saint Andrews are closed today.

City Transit will not be operating.

Many flights have been cancelled or delayed at the airport.

City Police are urging people to stay off the roads if possible.

The RCMP are warning against travel along Highway 1 all the way from St. Stephen to River Glade.

City Market is closed.

There’s no garbage collection today. If you normally get your garbage and compost picked up today, you should have then curbside by 7:30 Wednesday morning.

The law courts are closed today.

Gelas Duguay of Environment Canada says you can expect from 40 to 50 centimeters of snow to fall before the storm system passes early tomorrow morning.

The worst of the storm will be felt this morning and this afternoon with a blizzard warning in effect but 5 to 10 centimeters of that snow is expected tonight before tapering off in the early morning hours of tomorrow.

Duguay warns the strong winds gusting later today as a high as 90 kilometers an hour will result in whiteouts.

The Weather Network and Accuweather are calling for up to 35 centimeters of snow today while the Weather Underground is forecasting up to 30 centimeters with another snow storm expected on Thursday.
