Sophia Recovery Centre Ramps Up Fundraising Efforts

The Sophia Recovery Centre had a waiting list of women seeking recovery this year and needs a new home.

It is currently operating out of several locations in Saint John, as well as renting space in Rothesay and St. Stephen

Board chair Lynn Nagle said the space on Hazen Avenue is “totally inadequate.”

“In order for us to house our operations and expand regionally, we need a much, bigger space,” Nagle said.

Nagle said the new space must be safe.

“The neighbourhood we’re in right now is not safe. It’s not a safe place at all. The women are nervous to come there in the evening. We don’t have evening hours some of the week. We have Sunday hours. There is no parking,” Nagle said.

In their efforts to find a new home, Nagle said they have raised $300,000 so far with a goal to raise $1 million.

They hope to supplement that with government funding and Nagle added they have a promising lead on that front.

She said the Raise a Roof fundraising campaign has been in a ‘”quiet phase” but it will ramp up from this point.
