St. Stephen to get first long-term homeless shelter

After a few road blocks, St. Stephen will get its own homeless shelter.

Neighbourhood Works and the provincial government are partnering to open the town’s first long-term shelter.

The town declared a state of emergency last winter after a homeless man died.

Some residents opposed the initial shelter location on Happy Valley Road, which was indefinitely paused by then-Minister Kathy Bockus.

According to the CBC, a temporary one was open from February to April.

The new out of the cold shelter will have a similar timeframe, running from December and run until April.

Then it will become a Homeless Hub, focused on housing and outreach services.
