A housing project in the Waterloo Village that would see the old St. Vincent’s High School converted into a 34-unit apartment building is moving ahead with City Council giving preliminary approval to a rezoning proposal that would see the property go from Major Community Facility to Urban Centre Residential.
Peter MacKenzine of Comeau MacKenzie Architecture says it’s going to be one of the most significant heritage building restorations in recent years for the city’s central area and they’re anxious to get at it.
MacKenzie tells CHSJ News the plan is to develop the old portion of the school only, not the new addition which includes the new gym and science labs. According to a presentation delivered to council the school on Cliff Street has been vacant since the early 2000s.
MacKenzie says the aim is to have the apartments available to rent by the spring of 2017. They’re hoping to have 15 of the apartment units provincially designated affordable housing units.
He says they’re very pleased with council’s decision.
