UPDATE: One Injured, Two Cats Die In Fire

One person was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation and two cats died after a fire in the south end of Saint John.

Crews were called to a three-unit building on St. James Street near Charlotte Street around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Acting platoon chief Josh Hennessy said firefighters found heavy smoke and fire coming from the top floor.

Hennessy said there was significant fire damage on the top floor and heavy water damage on the bottom floor and in the basement.

He said eight people living in the three units are receiving emergency help from the Canadian Red Cross.

A total of 26 firefighters responded to the scene, said Hennessy. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
