Support for city’s strategy to help the homeless

A community agency has put its support behind Saint John’s homelessness strategy.

Fresh Start Services had previously expressed concerns about the city’s plan for so-called Red Zones under its Housing for All strategy.

Homeless encampments of any kind are not permitted in the Red Zones.

Fresh Start is participating in the strategy, providing outreach services in partnership with the city.

The organization’s executive director said recent meetings with city staff had helped reduce concerns about the plan and provide a clearer understanding of the city’s intent regarding zones and the timelines involved.

Melanie Vautour said it was unfortunate the discussions hadn’t occurred sooner, but Fresh Start is committed to moving forward and collaborating with the city.

“We know the city is committed to moving forward in a way that is person-centred, respecting the human rights of individuals living outside, and is understanding of the need for trauma-informed approaches to doing this work,” Vautour said in a letter to city council.

The Housing for All strategy and the new framework were approved by council on Sept. 22.
