For the first time ever, the tax base in Quispamsis went down this year with commercial starts non-existent. That was offset by an increase in the town’s unconditional grant of almost $350 thousand.
The draft 2018 budget calls for a tax hike of just under a cent to $1.29. Chief Administrative Officer Susan Deuville says that increase in the unconditional grant could not have come at a better time to avoid a larger tax increase.
She says the Finance Committee recommended a hold the line budget. It does propose a 4.4 per cent increase for police, 11 per cent increase for K-V Fire and 5.5 per cent boost in funding for the Q-Plex. There’s another proposal to spend $70 thousand to connect the Q-R trail to Rothesay.
