Temporary Car Shelters In Saint John Get Preliminary Approval From Council

Saint John Common Council has given first and second reading to a by law amendment to allow for those temporary car shelters in the city.

The shelters need to be a metre back from the front property line and 2 to 3 metres from the road or at least a foot from the sidewalk. Councillor Donna Reardon doesn’t think it is a good idea being that close to where people walk.

“I just want to make sure that it’s safe for anyone else that is trying to back out of their driveway,” she says.

Council has asked staff to come back before third reading with the best practices in other cities and the distance they use. Councillor David Merrithew wanted to know if the removal of the shelters after the winter would be properly enforced.
