The Impact Of Having Axel And Diesel Is Already Being Felt

Saint John’s police chief is happy that the K9 unit has been restored after going years without one.

The new K9 officers are Axel and Diesel and their handlers are Constables Geoff MacDonald and Peter Haslett.

Chief John Bates says having the K9 is just as important as having a tactical unit saying they when they need them it’s great that the service is available.

Bates tells us the dogs and their handlers will be on patrol and available most of the time.

He adds one of things they haven’t been able to measure is how many people they didn’t catch when they didn’t have a K9 unit.

Earlier this week, Diesel helped make an arrest when a man fled after a break and enter in the south end.
Diesel tracked down the man near St. James and Sydney Streets after officers set up a perimeter.

Chief Bates says last weekend all it took was for one of the dogs to bark and a culprit decided to surrender.
