The town of Rothesay also passed its 2018 budget but not without a little controversy.
The first motion for a budget with a 1-cent tax increase was defeated. Some councillors noted that budget went against the town’s own recommendation. That brought forth a second motion for 2-cent increase for a tax rate of $1.24 which passed.
In the discussion the budget was described as having a few unknowns.
Mayor Nancy Grant tells us when it comes to the KV firefighters it pertains to the collective agreement since they don’t know yet what they will have to pay them.
She says Quispamsis also wants a new fire station and they don’t what the costs will be associated with that.
Sewer and water rates are not going up next year.
The town is dealing with a decrease in the tax base of $5.6 million.
