The World Of Legal Cannabis May Be A Headache For Employers

The issue of legalizing marijuana is complex and may be a real headache for employers trying to navigate a new world.

At a Saint John conference, Dr. Paul Atkinson of WorkSafeNB told the crowd about how he lost two friends who were high on THC and were killed in a car crash.

He experienced something very different when back home in Ireland, he visited a neighbour with severe Parkinson’s disease who couldn’t stand or speak.

He says he walked and turned around and put his handed on my arm and said “Hi Paul, How are you?”. Atkinson says he thought a miracle happened and his neighbour’s wife showed him a small vile of cannabis oil. He says cannabis saved his life but also killed his two friends.

One challenge facing employers is dealing with edibles in the workplace like the marijuana-laced brownies someon might bring to work.

Lawyer Matt Letson says the answer for now is employers set the rule saying you can’t be impaired and if they see signs of impairment then testing is required.
