Three N.B. Newspapers Reduce Print Editions

Big changes are coming in March for readers of New Brunswick’s three English-language daily newspapers.

The Telegraph-Journal, Times & Transcript, and Daily Gleaner will only be published on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

The change will take effect on March 7, Brunswick News said Tuesday in a note to readers on its website.

It cited “economic and logistical challenges” in delivering papers and the “changing news patterns” of its audiences as the reason for the change.

According to Brunswick News, there will continue to be online news coverage seven days a week for subscribers.

On Tuesdays and Fridays, subscribers will receive a “special morning email” which will include a selection of local and provincial news, along with obituaries, comics, puzzles, and the editorial cartoon.

Brunswick News recently stopped publishing the Monday print edition of its three major papers.

The most recent changes at the three daily newspapers come approximately one year after the national newspaper chain Postmedia bought Brunswick News from J.D. Irving Ltd (JDI).

The deal included nine daily and weekly newspapers from across the province. It also included BNI’s parcel delivery business and the “proprietary distribution software” powering it.

Andrew MacLeod, the president and CEO of Postmedia, said at the time he believed BNI’s Eastern Canada operations complement Postmedia’s existing business and aligned with its strategic priorities.

“These titles have a proud history of providing excellent journalism across New Brunswick and we look forward to continuing that legacy,” MacLeod said in a news release.

A few months after the acquisition, which gave JDI a chunk of voting shares in Postmedia, Postmedia appointed JDI’s Jamie Irving as executive chair of the Postmedia board of directors.
