In the NHL, Mike Santorelli scored Toronto’s second goal in the tiebreaker as the Leafs get by the Detroit Red Wings in a shootout, 2-1 and Anaheim edged Edmonton 2-1.
In basketball, Saint John High won both games in the David MacPherson Memorial Classic over St. Malachy’s 76-39 in girls play and 123-42 in boys action.
In the NBA, Golden State won its 14th in a row, 105-93 over Houston, to improve to a league best 19 and 2.
The Los Angeles Dodgers traded All-Star second baseman Dee Gordon, righthander Dan Haren, infielder Miguel Rojas to the Miami Marlins as part of a three team trade that helped them acquire second baseman Howie Kendrick from the Los Angeles Angels. The Dodgers also acquired Marlins left-hander Andrew Heaney, considered a top pitching prospect, who was then traded to the Angels for Kendrick.
The Dodgers also dealt for 36 year old shortstop Jimmy Rollins from Philadelphia and are reported to be close to signing free agent pitcher Brandon McCarthy to a four-year contract.
The Boston Red Sox acquired lefthander Wade Miley from the Arizona Diamondbacks for pitchers Rubby De La Rosa and Allen Webster along with a minor leaguer yet to be identified.
